Thread topic: Is religion a mental illness?
I'm not sure if I necessarily agree that a man without faith is like a Ferrari without direction. Could you perhaps explain a little further? |
Quote:
faith [dict source] noun 1. confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability. 2. belief that is not based on proof: He had faith that the hypothesis would be substantiated by fact. 3. belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion: the firm faith of the Pilgrims. 4. belief in anything, as a code of ethics, standards of merit, etc.: to be of the same faith with someone concerning honesty. 5. a system of religious belief: the Christian faith; the Jewish faith. |
Of course in the Ferrari accident, many were valid to 'curse' the driver of the offending car on the basis that it did indeed shoot the red light although a minority have tried to excuse Ma Chi by suggesting that he might have overlooked the junctional red lights (jx. off Raffles hospital was undergoing road works then) before him in favor of the green lights at the next- thus his misjudgement which resulted in the fatal accident (LTA has since clarified that the light that Ma Chi defied were clearly visible even at night). That Ma Chi's Ferrari was traveling at a speed way above the regulatory speed limit is out of question- which was the most likely cause of the multiple fatalities.
In short, many have weighed in about their opinions because both Ma Chi and his Ferrari seem to be lightning rods of discussion given their pinnacle positions in the 'systems' to which they belong- Ma Chi being an example of a successful foreigner and Ferrari being the at the pinnacle of sports car technology. Some have suggested that the speed at which Ma Chi drove his Ferrari was a display of the perpetual disregard of foreigners for local law whilst the beating of the red light being definite proof of their ignorance of it.
So what was it that gave Ma Chi such a sense of invincibility (faith) that he extinguished his own life and 2 others along the way?
In short, there is faith in almost everything we do. It was thus Ma Chi's possibly misplaced faith resulted in him both subjugating local speed limits as well as traffic control systems and his mistaken impression of the superior abilities (speed) of his Ferrari that were the possible causes of the 3 fatality accident at the junction adjacent to Raffles hospital.
Like someone else in this thread mentioned that almost all large things in life require faith... ditto all small things.
There isn't a fact to say that one's fiance/ fiancee would always be the most ideal/ faithful nor that oneself would remain faithful to one's spouse so isn't it by faith that a couple marries?- ditto everything that happens thereafter.
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1, the Bible.[Faith and doubt quotes]
