Re: 'IRs here have not created more gambling addicts: CRA'
What IMH study is Mr Magnus citing?
Searching for studies containing word 'gam' at the IMH research website:
Only one article since 2008 is found published at 'IMHresearch': http://www.imhresearch.com.sg/pub_2010_.aspx shows up:
[44.Winslow M, Subramaniam M, Qiu S, Lee A. Socio-demographic Profile and Psychiatric Comorbidity of Subjects with Pathological Gambling. Annals Academy of Medicine, Singapore. 39(2): 122-8.]
An abstract of this study can be found at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20237734
It however reveals under 'MATERIALS AND METHODS': "Questionnaires were administered to 40 cases"
So if this was indeed the study that Mr Magnus was referring to then one must ask if a survey of just 40 persons is representative of the problems faced by all Singaporeans.
Perhaps Mr Magnus should clarify here what exactly the study he was referring to was; are these published or unpublished results and what were the methods used in the conduct of this study. I might be mistaken but this simple investigation doesn't give me much confidence about the research that Mr Magnus cites.
That said, I believe that the focus should be on education rather then just studies done primed to support the having of more casinos around.
That said, the information that ought be given to gamblers should be should be of the form (on a per game basis):
- Odds of returning 2x or more of wager,
- of retrieving equal/ less then wager and
- of retrieving half/ less of original wager.
