(At Thread: Minister Heng says okay to go botak for school girls)
The reality is not many cancer patients who have lost their hairs during treatment actually go out without a wig? Only those who is still healthy and who want to show the world they have done something in support of cancer patients go around with a freshly shaven head. Therefor, what the school is doing is to impart to the girls not to show off their deeds if their volunteerism is sincerely from their heart. It should be a heart felt deed and not a show off deed. |
It's like judges being dressed in their traditional legal robes.
Shorn heads and traditional judicial clothing are each public displays towards the fight against cancer and the the wisdom and purity of the bench respectively. Like the flashing lights of an operational ambulance/ police van, each is designed to look the part, for operational efficacy, wisdom/ integrity as the case maybe.
Thus, unlike monetary or other private contributions with the possibility of anonymity, shorn heads are a deliberate bold statement, one that the St Margret's principal at first instance, failed to comprehend (**speculate: maybe there is a discipline problem in the school, so the Principal was on the defensive**).
To wear a wig would both defeat the original purpose as well as be a waste of money which would have been better used for the principle cause. It is good that the principle has since reflected on her thinking and since decided to leverage upon the girls good intentions to bring morality within her school to a much higher plane. Perhaps in private, the principle could reimburse the girls the price of the wigs (if bought) and perhaps donate them to the cancer society of Singapore, for use by cancer patients who might find a use for them.
