Was thinking about this topic lately and think that there is some truth to the rhetorical question if indeed $$$ can buy happiness, BUT with caveats of course.
Its like asking if $$$ can buy water, if its just the basic necessity of water (mineral; water in Singapore)- the answer is yes- just S$1 will still probably get you a small bottle of water in many places today (mama stall, not restaurant). But say adrift/ shipwrecked on a deserted island, a 1 kg gold bar would probably be of no help in your attainment of fresh water (/survival).
Similarly happiness, if one is just out for the more banal/ boorish kinds of 'happiness' such as that attained from e.g. sex, food, entertainment, gambling etc- then yes- such is mostly attainable in a cosmopolitan city such as Singapore.
If however, one desires true enduring happiness that is derivative from e.g. spirituality: e.g. confidence about issues of the after life, a deep and loving relationship in a heterosexual relationship (biblical standard type)- then like the instance of the man shipwrecked on a deserted island- there are many other factors to consider wrt his survivability: was preparation for a ship wreck made: emergency supplies, GPS tracking, contact with loved-ones, emergency communications equipment n power supply etc etc...
So this is my point:
Money can buy happiness, but sometimes also at a high cost. (e.g. visiting Geylang prostitute for cheap 'service' and then getting HIV thereafter or getting gambling addiction from casino 'investments' and then having no family thereafter (divorce, separation etc)).
